On the documentation for the app, it says it can handle up to 2000 contacts. However when I have set everything up and am about to sync, I get a warning that I should't sync if I have more than 1000. I have about 1700. What to do?

The limit was imposed by the way the Gmail APIs we were using handled retrieving contacts and their memory usage. Too many contacts and it would use up the available memory on the iPhone and crash. They have since improved the memory usage which allows us to handle more contacts. The warning on the app itself just hasn't been updated it looks like.
Syncing that many contacts should work fine, it will just take awhile.

ok-thanks for the quick response. Trying it now. I've turned off all other forms of syncing with gmail (both via itunes and exchange) to limit any conflicts.....

Also make sure if you were using Google ActiveSync previously, that you've turned off contact syncing.
